We help governments, international donors, NGOs, and others to become more responsive to the communities they serve.

We are seeking a Director of Design to lead our work in understanding human needs and creating meaningful solutions that improve lives and livelihoods. The Director of Design will lead multidisciplinary teams, direct project activities, and manage client relationships.

Our ideal candidate is fluent in both human-centered design and global development. You are an inspired systems thinker who can lead others in the pursuit of a big-picture vision, but you also have the focus to nail the details. You are equally comfortable meeting government officials in the capital or working with citizens in the villages. You are enterprising and have the chops to become a star all on your own, but you value (and know how to maximize value from) a diverse team. You bring greater depth to our existing toolbox of design, applied ethnography, institutional analysis, and other methodologies. You believe strongly in the need for context-appropriate solutions to governance and development challenges.

In addition to meeting our current needs, our ideal candidate sees Reboot’s forward trajectory and is able to help blaze the trail that will get us there. You will be able to communicate our efforts to external audiences in a way that transforms dialogue and practice across sectors.

This is a leadership role at a growing organization, with significant opportunities for professional development. The position is based in our New York office, with the expectation of international travel up to 40 percent of the time.



RESPONSIBILITIES

PROJECT LEADERSHIP:

Lead design process to understand user, stakeholder, and client needs; translate user and institutional insights into effective, appropriate solutions; and develop and plan for implementation.

Create and manage project plans to ensure successful completion of project goals.

Manage each project's staff and consultants, including a range of subject matter experts and technical contributors, ensuring their timely and effective inputs.

Train and mentor Reboot’s junior staff in the processes of service and systems design.

Ensure quality standards on all project outputs and client deliverables.

Document Reboot approach in the form of organizational templates and guides to ensure consistency in processes and quality outputs.

Liaise with stakeholders in donor organizations, governments, academia, civil society groups, communities, and others to ensure their appropriate involvement.



CLIENT ENGAGEMENT & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT:

Manage and grow client relationships, working with C-level executives and senior public sector officials.

Lead client discussions and meetings on project goals, methodology, and outputs.

Develop new business prospects through scoping conversations, proposal development, and client negotiation.



THOUGHT LEADERSHIP:

Spread Reboot’s philosophy and work through writing, public speaking, teaching engagements, and other avenues.

Engage in ongoing learning and broader dialogue with the sector to ensure continued development of Reboot's practice.

Contribute to Reboot's internal process innovation and organizational development initiatives.



QUALIFICATIONS

A successful candidate will bring a mix of skills and experiences to the role. Specifically, we are looking for someone who can combine design skills, project/staff management, and client relations.

10 years or more of relevant experience with professional advancement.

Formal training in design, governance, social sciences, development, or other related fields.

Strong understanding of multiple issues relevant to Reboot's work, such as: international development, governance, open government, education, public health, financial inclusion, mobile technology, or civic participation.

Demonstrated ability to lead all phases of the project development and design process, including needs assessment, project scoping, research, strategy, design, prototyping, and implementation planning.

Significant international work experience, including the ability to operate effectively in unfamiliar cultural contexts and poor infrastructure environments.

Leadership, management, and team-building skills. Ability to hire, train, supervise, and mentor staff on multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

Ability to work under tight time constraints, multitask with ease, and adjust plans in the face of changing priorities.

Client management, donor relations, or business development experience. Previous work in consulting or professional services firms is valued.

Superb written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to synthesize and present complex ideas to diverse audiences. Fluency in multiple languages preferred.

Visual thinker and maker with a sharp eye for visual design across media.

In addition, the successful candidate will have an appreciation of complexity, comfort with ambiguity, and sense of humor.
